Station on the Borderworlds
Each character must possess one of the following traits, selected at character creation. This choice cannot be altered or retrained. Each trait can only be selected once.
You managed to make it into the system, and somehow limp your way to the station, but it cost you your last credit and now you have no prospects for making money to move on or settle somewhere. There is work to be found on Paxem, however, working for the Blackvine Mercenary Company.
You begin the game with no credits (none can be saved from character creation, but equipment can be purchased as normal). Survival becomes a class skill for you, unless you already have it as a class skill, in which case you gain a +1 bonus on Survival checks. You also gain a +1 bonus to any check involving negotiations.
You grew up on a simple farm on Chyra, but always dreamed of adventure off the ball of mud that you call home. When the Blackvine company put out a call for new recruits, you seized the opportunity.
You gain a +1 bonus to Fortitude saves and a +1 bonus on Diplomacy checks when interacting with native Chyrans.
You had a family friend or relative who was a veteran in the Blackvine company and the stories of fighting evil cults and space pirates inspired you. As soon as you were able, you joined up.
You gain a +1 bonus to Will saves and a +1 bonus to Diplomacy checks when interacting with Blackvine members.
Whether you are guilty or not is irrelevant, what matters is that you were caught by the Blackvine company for a non-violent criminal offense. Rather than waste company resources locking you up, you were sentenced to serve the company in order to repay your debt.
Despite the conviction, you were extremely lucky to get off relatively lightly. Maybe it is the blessing of some god for enduring despite your innocence, or maybe the universe giving you a shot at redemption for your misdeeds.
Once per day you can reroll any single Attack roll, Ability or Skill check, or Saving Throw. You must take the second result, even if it is worse than the initial result.
